Has the Website Page Width Gone the Way of the Dinosaur?

There’s been an on-going debate as to how wide to make a website design – and the truth is – your website can be designed any width. I know several website designers who start with 924 pixels, some who design their websites at 968 pixels and others who use design with a minimum of 1024 pixels.

But what works great for me is designing the ‘live area’ – or that area that contains your search engine optimized content, to be 960 pixels wide. You see, a pixel width of 960 is divisible by 2, 3 and 4 – so designing a 4-column website layout is never a problem. At this size, I’m left with about 60 pixels or so to transition from content to browser width – which is plenty.
